Interesting Perspective on the White Working Class…

This article in the Atlantic makes for an interesting review (Comments to follow later)…


PS.  Funny that some people on Twitter found an issue with the article’s characterization of these folks as “America’s Original Underclass,” on the reasoning that there were slaves in Jamestown.  Actually, the first “slaves” in the English-speaking New World were white indentured servants–i.e. the 16th/17th century equivalent of these folks.  Further, the first African slaves brought to Jamestown were given the same legal standing as the indentured servants, precisely because, in Northern Europe, there was no law governing slavery yet.  So the article is more right with the “Original Underclass” characterization than not.
